Presentations

'Qual Research: A different perspective'
Annabelle Phillips, MORI Director of MORI Qual Hothouse within Ipsos
MORI
To understand how to get the most out of qualitative research we need to
put the participant first. Understanding how they feel about the
research process and what you want to get from them will help you
achieve more insightful results

'Meet the New Boss, Same as the Old Boss'
Susie Fisher, Director Susie Fisher Group looks at qualitative research
in Visitor Studies with a view to understanding the drivers for
innovation.

Jane Sillis, Director of engage will talk about two programmes exploring
how young people engage with galleries and the visual arts. enquire is
a research project looking at how young people learn in galleries with
clusters of researchers, galleries, artists, young people and teachers.
enquire is part of the Strategic Commissioning Education Programme in
Museums and Galleries funded by the Department for Education and Skills
and the Department for Culture Media and Sport. The second programme
Jane will describe is envision, an action research programme which
involves vulnerable young people working with galleries to create youth
friendly venues. The programme is funded by the Department for
Communities and Local Government, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and
by the Arts Council of England.

'Visitor Research in the 2000s: Are the challenges really new?'
Dr. Theano Moussouri, Lecturer Museum Studies, UCL, Director of Audience
Focus. This paper will look at cutting edge research on visitor learning
in museums and other out-of-school learning environments. It will
briefly present some of the key questions the visitor studies field
tried to answer in the '80s and '90s and compare them with questions
being asked today. Two case studies of recent research conducted at the
Geffrye Museum and the National Trust will be used to illustrate recent
research strands and to show how the visitor studies field has responded
to the need to produce evidence of the museum's role in a democratic
society. The paper will conclude by looking at the role visitor
researchers and evaluators must play to facilitate the museum in its new
role.
