Facing the Challenge

Have you ever avoided tackling a subject because it is controversial? This interactive day will give you the opportunity to:
* find out how other colleagues have developed creative learning projects/ resources on a series of controversial subjects ranging from the legacies of empire, HIV and AIDS to the slave trade
* discuss their successes and challenges
* try out some creative techniques for yourself
Session leaders will include Sarah Longair, Schools and Young Audiences Education Officer British Museum, Lucy Bradley, Education Manager, British Empire and Commonwealth Museum and Anna Farthing, PhD Researcher in drama, difficult histories and museums. Manchester University/BECM/AHRC
Attendees will have an opportunity to visit the Royal Naval Museum's exhibition: 'Chasing Freedom: the role of the Royal Navy in the Suppression of the Transatlantic Slave Trade'.

Projects Highlighted
Commonwealth FM, a community radio station at the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum. Lucy will talk about this project as a way of tackling the legacies of the British Empire.
Telling The Story of HIV And AIDS at The British Museum, from a gallery talk to lesson plans developed and piloted with a school to encourage the use of material culture as evidence for studying Science and Citizenship at Secondary School.
Participatory drama and digital media, this workshop will demonstrate approaches to employing these methods in museum and heritage site learning to aid better understanding of difficult and sensitive histories. Anna will use case studies from several projects. Anna Farthing holds a Collaborative Doctoral Award from the Arts and Humanities Research Council and is undertaking practice based research into how participatory drama and digital media can aid the understanding of difficult and sensitive histories with Manchester University and The British Empire and Commonwealth Museum.
Chasing Freedom, a special exhibition to mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the Slave Trade. It presents for the first time the Royal Navy's role in combatting the trade and its continuing work in defending human rights across the world today. This exhibition is accompanied by a programme of family and school events.
