Janet, we piloted this over the past couple of years in my School and
it's now being promoted more widely across the university. Pedagogical
issues aside, I'm a big fan as I do think it has a deterrent effect, its
use improves consistency across staff members (narrowing the gap between
those who spotted plagiarism in written work and those that didn't or
couldn't be bothered), and it makes finding sources of plagiarized work
much easier.

We do this in a blanket sense as part of their enrollment.

Sometimes in the case of user error. For example, a staff member sets up
a module space but forgets to create an assignment to which the work can
be submitted. Or a student forgets hus login info. However, there have
been some problems with the system this fall that have occasionally made
it hard to submit work.
> Does using Turnitin increase staff workload significantly?
>
In general, it decreases workload, often significantly. The reason is
that the hunt - even online - for plagiarism sources can be extremely
time consuming, particularly when students use more than one source.
Pre-Turnitin a common scenario would be to suspect plagiarism when
reading the hardcopy then spend several hours finding the sources.
Turnitin doesn't catch everything but it generally finds enough that one
can go ahead without any additional hunting.

No.
