Specific answers:
>Do your students have to give permission for their work to be
electronically scrutinised?
No, it is part of the general data protection/ use of computing
statements they sign. I make sure that students in our school have a
copy of the Turnitin document 'information for students' (see website
link above) but it is for their information not for approval and return.
Does electronic submission cause any issues?
Not so far, some students prefer it to other forms of e-submission since
they get an email confirming submission. We use the Blackboard building
block and this has helped to alleviate many problems. Blind marking is
an issue for us as this route of submission is hard to anonymise simply,
the Turnitin UK user group have been talking to Turnitin USA about this.
Does using Turnitin increase staff workload significantly?
I would say it has reduced workload in some cases, since plagiarism can
be very difficult to find and prove manually. In other cases there is an
extra task of looking through the reports as we ask tutors to manually
look them over to make a judgement call about whether any works needs to
be reported on for plagiarism. Our largest classes are still only 150
students in the school, and if you sort by percentage and pick a cut off
point (there is no set cut off point, this needs to be judged by the
individual) then it doesn't take too long to check them over.
Have you had any issues regarding Intellectual Property Rights?
No - the Turnitin information for students covers this, you shouldn't
have any issues with it.
