USING POWERPOINT CREATIVELY
13 September 2006, Half-day, London
THIS WORKSHOP IS AVAILABLE AS A MORNING OR AFTERNOON SESSION
"Not another set of boring bullet points!"
How many times have you sat through one presentation after another consisting of nothing but headings and bullet points? With greater and greater pressure to add value, library and information professionals are turning towards tasks such as training their users in information tools and presenting the results of their research direct to clients - as well as promoting their own services to existing and potential users. PowerPoint is a first rate teaching and presentational tool for these purposes, but all too often it is used unimaginatively and with little regard for its visual impact.
BENEFITS OF ATTENDING
This practical and cost-effective half-day workshop will introduce participants to simple techniques they can use to make their PowerPoint presentations stand out from the crowd, and hence increase their audience's interest in and understanding of the subject being presented. Drawing on practice in television and print journalism, the workshop will offer simple design, illustration and animation techniques to help turn textual and numeric information into visually attractive presentations.
BY THE END OF THE EVENT PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE LEARNT:
· how to use different slide and slide master layouts to create a distinctive corporate identity
· techniques for presenting text and figures graphically
· imaginative use of illustrations, autoshapes and drawing tools to lessen reliance on bullet points and lists
· selective use of animation to add visual interest without making presentations too gimmicky.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Anyone who uses PowerPoint for promotional, training, conference paper or desk research presentation purposes.
WORKSHOP LEADER: TIM BUCKLEY OWEN
Tim has over 20 years' experience of creating persuasive and visually interesting presentations - as a freelance trainer and information industry commentator, and in promotional and communications posts at CILIP, MLA and the Library & Information Commission.
To benefit fully from this workshop, participants will need to be familiar with the basic features of PowerPoint, Excel and Word. Participants are also encouraged to bring along their own textual and numeric documents; there will be an opportunity to turn some of these into presentations during the practical session.
