medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Pamela Sheingorn gave an interesting plenary at Kalamazoo not too long
ago on the depiction of Joseph. There is a change in his dep[iction
late in the Middle Ages, a switch to a more positive role. You can find
Jean Gerson's name linked to this development.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and
culture
Sure it is Christopher. Apart from the occupation as a carpenter
is there little masculinity in the depictions of Joseph during
the Nativity and Flight into Egypt. He is an obedient servant,
dressed with little pomp, and placed in the corner of the picture
or at least a little apart from the Virgin and Child.
Many other persons from the NT were also quite late to enter
liturgy. The three Mary's f.ex. - are very rare in litanies
before they were taken serious by the Carmelites in the late
15th c.
Only a few weeks ago did I find a curious miniature of the
Flight into Egypt, where Joseph is whipping furiously on
the Donkey apparently to make clear that they were in a hurry.
His facial expression, however, did not match his action.
The only men who could identify themselves with Joseph were
those few who had their own doubt about the paternity of the
children their wife gave birth to.
