medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (19. March) is the feast day of:
Joseph (1st cent.) This only became a universal feast in the
sixteenth century. Joseph, foster-father of Jesus, doesn't seem to
have been much noticed before the late Middle Ages.
The Martyrs of Mar Saba (d. 797) 20 monks, killed by Arabic raiders
in an attack on their monastery. It was a two-fold raid. First a
large number of monks were wounded in an attack that was interrupted
in mid-pillage by a rescue party. But then the raiders came back.
Some of the monks hid in a cave; the raiders lit a large fire at the
entrance and slowly asphyxiated them, offering release in return for
the monks revealing where their treasure was hidden.
Giovanni Buralli (blessed) (d. 1289) Giovanni Buralli was a native
of Parma who became a Franciscan. He was a moderate who tended to
sympathize with the Spirituals in the growing fissure within the
order, and ended up serving as minister general of the order for ten
years. GB abdicated his office because he was under a shadow as a
Joachimite (although eventually acquitted of the charge). His cult
was approved in 1777.
Mark of Montegallo (blessed) (d. 1496) Mark studied in Perugia and
Bologna, becoming a doctor of both law and medicine; he became a
physician in Ascoli. He married, but they soon split up (she became
a Poor Clare; he became a Franciscan). M. was an eloquent preacher,
especially promoting the *montes pietatis*, small banks established
to help the poor.
