medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (21. March) is the feast day of:
the martyrs of Alexandria (d. 342) A large number of catholics were
killed during Good Friday services when Arians (and pagans) attacked
their churches.
Enda (d. c. 530) Enda was perhaps Ireland's first monastic founder.
He established a number of monasteries; the most famous was Killeaney
on Inishmore.
Nicholas of Flue (d. 1487) Nicholas (better known in his lifetime as
"Bruder Klaus") is a Swiss saint. He was born to wealthy farmers,
married and fathered 10 children, and lived the life of a pious
layperson. But when he was about 50, N. decided to withdraw from the
world, living only on the eucharist and winning a great reputation as
a spiritual and practical counsellor. He was canonized in 1947.
