A (small) number of RADstats members have now been kind enough to reply via
e-mail, in far more eloquent terms than I could express myself. (You will
have to take my word, as I will not, of course, list their names). I am
satisfied that a viable minority hold what I deem to be healthy attitudes in
a Professional List of this kind (and in the world of UK Statistics and
Academe generally). I do not wish to offend further, but may I just point
out that the word "Orwellian" was used.
As I said, I, respectfully, propose to tastefully discuss this matter
elsewhere. (If you are interested, in rec.org.mensa - an International
discussion group having no connection, etc and other quasi-professional and
Political Newsgroups.) I hope this doesn't offend anyone; as a product of
a UK University, and someone with a few ties to UK academe and UK
scientists teaching/working in N America, I believe it will be useful and
beneficial to mildly discuss this matter in a Public forum. It is an
important matter, as it clearly touches upon current Government,
Establishment and Media attitude, Freedom of Speech, in the UK.
I assume that carefully worded reviews of books and peer-reviewed papers
with a substantial Statistical reference will continue to be OK in future. I
will carefully avoid, and avoid copying, any comments or Public Policy
opinions outside of this frame of reference. Thank you. With best wishes to
all correspondents.
