Hi Folks,
Being up somewhat late last night, I heard Owen
Bennett-Jones on the BBC World Service interviewing
John B Bellinger III.
Who he? Well,
"John B Bellinger III, legal adviser to the US
Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, talks to
Owen Bennett-Jones on The Interview
John B Bellinger III is at the heart of the
disputes about America's prosecution of the
war on terror.
His daily beat is dealing with the Guantanamo
Bay detention centre, the use of torture and
the tensions between civil liberties and security.
He's also touring the world to put America's
position across."
It's the most chilling case of evasive dodgy language
and reasoning I've heard for a long time.
If you want to judge whether he has "put America's
position across", then you can listen to the interview
at:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/programmes/the_interview.shtml
(for the time being directly from the page you see at
the above URL; later it should go into "The Interview
Archive" which you can access from the link at the top
right of the above URL).
In fact, I think he did put America's position across,
though perhaps not as he intended it to be understood,
thanks to some very shrewd interviewing by Owen Bennett-Jones.
Best wishes to all,
Ted.
