Subject: Decennial Supplement facing the axe
Dear Ali,
At a meeting on health inequalities statistics at ONS the other week, I
was horrified to learn that the Decennial Supplement on occupational
mortality and social class is to cease publication. Equally shocking is
the fact that I didn't learn this from an announcement to this effect,
but had to interpret it from a statement that a series of papers in
Health Statistics Quarterly Is seen as the most appropriate way of
publishing the linked 2001 Census and 2001-2003 occupational mortality
data.
When I expressed surprise that the Labour government which had given
such priority to inequalities was apparently to preside over the axeing
of this key social policy document of well over a century's standing, it
was almost as if this fact hadn't occurred to the assembled civil
servants. When David Blane and I put forward a strong case for its
retention, we got the impression that the ONS statisticians may well be
sympathetic, but that the key person to be persuaded is Karen Dunnell.
Could I therefore suggest that you use every means possible to get the
message to Karen, Liam Donaldson, Patricia Hewitt and/or any others you
(and RadStats?) think appropriate, that the 'Occ Mort' must be saved and
that an explicit statement to the effect that it will indeed be
published is required in the very near future.
Many thanks / best wishes, Alex
