Dear All

The School of Design at Northumbria University is presently preparing a
Professional Doctorate in Design. The PDD is being developed following
Northumbria's framework for Professional Doctorates, and extends the
research principles behind our MA Design Practice.

I would be happy to answer questions and take comments on this.

Regards

Kev

Hi,

I have written a short account of some aspects of Professional
Doctorates in the UK in a review of Doctoral Studies in Design in 2003:

RUST, C. (2003) Many Flowers, Small Leaps Forward: debating doctoral
education in design Art Design and Communication in Higher Education.
Vol 1 No 3 (Invited paper)

You can find a pre-press copy here:

http://www.chrisrust.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/academic/abstracts/adche%20rev
iew.htm

The specific discussion of Professional Doctorates starts at the bottom
of page 5 (of the pre-press version) but it is set against the whole
paper. The main issue is that UK professional doctorates (eg in
business or education) may have a greater taught and subject-specific
content than UK PhD's (maybe not much more than PhD's in some other
countries) but they are still essentially research degrees.

I'm not aware of a Design Prof Doc programme in the UK but I daresay
somebody has one or is planning one? University of East London has a
Professional Doctorate in Fine Art at
http://www.uel.ac.uk/programmes/ava/postgraduate/summary/docfineart.htm
Their outline makes it clear that the practical work is a "programme of
research" not a programme of professional practice. I do not know what
that means in reality but perhaps somebody from UEL is listening and can
tell us more?

regards
Chris

Dear all
I am about to move to Swinburne University, Faculty of Design
(Australia) where professional doctorates alongside PhDs are offered. I
am interested in looking at contexts in the UK where professional
doctorates are offered and what the issues are, e.g. practice theory
balance, project and text. Any thoughts on the list?
