Glasgow Museums is seeking an experienced educational consultant to carry out a piece of research within a budget of £6000. The full brief for this piece of work is attached and a summary is below.
Glasgow Museums Resource Centre (GMRC) opened in November 2003, and is a publicly accessible museum store, open 7 days a week. The nature of the facility supports a different type of learning experience (tactile resources, being able to investigate objects, informal atmosphere and relatively small groups). We believe that this type of learning can be of benefit to those who have not responded well to a formal learning environment. We recognise that this is a potential strength of a unique facility, and aim to establish, as part of GMRC Phase 2, a 'Centre for Disaffected and Interrupted Learners'.
The aim of the research is to:
a. conduct a survey of literature across disciplines (English language worldwide) on the subject of: (i) published research into the processes and effects of disaffection and disengagement among learners (ii) provision for disaffected and disengaged learners (iii) existing measures of success used in work with disaffected and disengaged learners
b. identify examples of innovation and good practice in similar or comparable service delivery, nationally and internationally
c. outline what definitions exist within different agencies and professional cultures within Glasgow to describe processes of disaffection and disengagement, and how these are understood and applied
d. review current provision within the City of Glasgow
The outcomes of this research will be:
a. literature review of published research
b. case studies of examples of good practice
c. glossary of terms and definitions to describe disaffection and disengagement and how they are understood and applied
d. Summary of current provision and list of providers within City of Glasgow.
