* MSP welcomed everyone to the first Adult Learning in Museums Network meeting and was encouraged by the range of people from different backgrounds present.
* MSP asked all present to:
Þ Give some examples of Adult education programmes that they have been involved with
Þ Explain where they would like to see adult learning in museums go
Þ Share an issue with the group
* MSP said there was an opportunity for museums to fill the gap left by the drop in funding in the FE sector.
* AK has been working with Sutton House and local parents introducing the latter to what's available in museums. 6 week course was very successful but AK was interested in how this success could be developed. Would like to have the course accredited.
* PK said that while LSE where looking more towards approved qualifications, adult community learning was about progression routes. She would like to see more money put into information and advice for adult learners.
* IC mentioned that the Royal Armouries has had little experience with Adult learners but next year they are hosting a programme with Birkbeck and are developing a collaborative programme with Historic Royal Palaces, Royal Armouries and Birkbeck.
* HMP has been working at the Natural History Museum on the Darwin Centre Live project. This is being changed to 'Nature Live' and is an opportunity for adults and older children to interactive with real scientists. Many of her events for adults have a core audience and she would like to know how to capture this repeat audience better.
* MF has been working on the 'Moving Here' project for the National Archives www.movinghere.org.uk Funding for the project is about to end.
* The National Maritime Museum will be opening a new £80 million education centre. While the Museum has lots of events and activities for schools and families the services for adult learners have been old fashioned and based mainly on navel history. HW would like to see the adult programme move in a new direction and include more abstract topics such as time and space.
* The Welcome Trust will be opening up two new galleries devoted to the History of Medicine. This will be the first time that the trust will have their own space for exhibitions. The new space will be just for adults and the over 14s. At the moment they run evening debates, lectures and drop in activities but with the new galleries opening LJ is interested in ideas and opinions on what types of programmes she and the Trust should be running for adults.
* LG explained that Surrey Museums run a whole range of programmes for adults from lectures to NADFAS members to outreach and reminiscence workshops. She brought up the issue of accreditation, that a qualification isn't the measure of a good course. All present agreed and there was concerned that with the new government White Paper quality non-accredited courses will suffer . JC said that the Horniman Museum had problems filling their accredited courses.
* JH said that she would like to diversify her audience without isolating her current core audience. She is also interested in looking at partnerships with other organisations.
Future Meetings
* A consensus was reached about what the groups would like discussed at future meetings
Þ To put adult learning in museums into context (NIACE?)
Þ I.A..G (information Advice and Guidance) and progression routes (Adult Learning Inspectorate or Learning Skills Council)
Þ Extended schools and adult learning (Teacher development agency?)
Þ Adult learning and communities linking museums with ACL/FE locally
Þ Brainstorming session, e.g. sharing names of good lecturers
MSP to look at getting speakers to present to ALIMN in the future
