Thank you to all those who responded to my question
"What do laboratories actually do with the money?" I
apparently opened a can of worms.
40% of respondents said that trials money went into
the general laboratory accounts.Of these, slightly
less than half had any say in what that money was
actually spent on. Some comments were "We are so short
of cash we need every penny to replace instruments"
and "we can only just survive for new minor pieces of
equipment thanks to the trials money" and "It all goes
to cover staff costs".
35% said that money from trials went into a separate
fund to provide education - course attendance
fees/textbooks/journals etc.
20% said it went on staff facilities (new microwave in
tea-room, tea/coffee supplies, new on-call bed etc)
The remainder said it went on:
Christmas party/New Year party
Annual barbecue/outing
Shared equally between all staff with a cheque at
Christmas (!!)
Two very disgruntled respondents said that trials
money was paid directly to their Consultants and was
kept by them.
Several respondents felt very strongly that trials
work was done by the staff, often necessitating extra
work or different procedures, and that the staff
should get some benefit.
Perhaps there should be some agreed national procedure
for what becomes of the money? Although several
unfortunates remarked that getting any money at all
for trials would be a start...
Thanks again for your replies.
