What approach do you take to the orientation and continuing development
of interpreters, docents, or other museum educators (paid and volunteer)
at your site?
What percentage of time do you spend on sessions related to:
- the subject matter of your institution? (history, art history,
artists' histories, etc.)
- museums or galleries? (history of your museum or gallery,
administration, philosophy and goals, museum literacy, history of
museums/galleries in general, etc.)
- the visitors and other users of the site? (demographic info, school
curriculum, visitor studies, learning theories, etc.)
- museum education principles and practice (principles of and planning
for museum education, how-to "teach", reflective practice, etc.)
- other? (please specify)
I am interested in the *structure* of orientation and continuing
development programs rather than specific materials. Most welcome is (1)
a brief outline of your overall annual orientation/development program
for interpretive/education staff and volunteers, along with (2) a very
brief outline of each individual orientation or training session. Anyone
willing to share these outlines, please send along with your name, site,
and contact info to [log in to unmask] . I will contact you for
permission should I wish to quote from or refer directly to your
material.
I am researching this topic for two articles on which I am currently
working. You can read some of my past articles at
http://www.mccastle.com/publications.asp . Let me know if you'd like
more information on this present research.
I look forward to hearing from you!
Cheers,
Chris
