medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (9. December) is the feast day of:
the Seven Martyrs of Samosata (d. 297 or 308) A group of well-born
magistrates and patricians of Samosata who refused to sacrifice to
the state gods. They were flogged and imprisoned on a starvation
diet for months, but *still* refused to sacrifice. Finally they were
crucified (but not upside-down).
Leocadia (d. 304?) A noblewoman of Toledo, Leocadia was tortured and
imprisoned during Diocletian's persecution. She died of her injuries
while still in prison. L. is the principle patron of the city of
Toledo.
Gorgonia (d. 372) Gorgonia was the elder sister of SS Gregory and
Caesarius of Nazianzen; they were the offspring of a Cappadocian
bishop. Gorgonia married, had three children, and lived a deeply
devout life. She is mostly known from her brother Gregory's funeral
oration.
