medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (8. December) is the feast day of:
The Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. Only declared a point
of dogma in 1854. The idea seems to have really started to win
general acceptance in the 12th century. But Bernard of Clairvaux,
Thomas Aquinas, and a few nonentities like that protested the idea of
adopting this feast, and the argument went on for centuries.
Budoc (6th cent.) Budoc was a generic Celtic saint---various sources
claim him for Wales, Ireland, and Brittany. He is also the patron
saint of sites in Cronwal and Devon. A very late legend tells that
B. was born in a barrel at sea.
Romaric (d. 653) Romaric was a Frankish noble who became a monk at
Luxeuil. He founded a double monastery at Habendum (later called
Remiremont) in the Vosges.
Galgano (d. 1181) Galgano was a noble, born near Siena. Like so
many Italian male saints, he had a pretty wild youth---but after
visions of St. Michael he became a hermit. After his death, pilgrims
soon came to his tomb, a papal commission was set up to inquire into
his holiness in 1183, and G. was probably canonized in 1190.
