medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
To add a bit from Eastern Europe....
The only oldish ones I can think of (mostly due to visiting them a couple of
years ago) are both in Plovdiv, Bulgaria:
Dzhumaya Mosque: This is of uncertain date. Some date it as late as the 17th
C. The arrangement of the inside is more typical of the 14th & 15th C. The
oldest date suggested for it is under the reign of Sultan Murad II
(1359-85).
Imaret Mosque: Built in 1444.
These others are a bit later, but might be interesting to you (all around
the same date as Istanbul's major mosques):
Sofia (Bulgaria) - Banya Bashi Mosque (1576)
Novi Pazar (Serbia) - Altum Alem Mosque (16th C)
Prizren (Serbia [Kosovo]) - Sinan Pasha Mosque (1571)
Mostar (Bosnia-Hercegovina) - Karadjoz Beg Mosque (1557 - destroyed 1992)
Sarajevo (Bosnia-Hercegovina) - Karadjoz Beg Mosque (1531)
Sorry these are a bit late for "medieval"
Rob Howe.
