Dear All
Synergy is an alliance between the University of Glasgow and the
University of Strathclyde. Each year synergy offer a number of PhD
scholarships to excellent students. These scholarships include a
maintenance award of £12,300, payment of home/EU fees, and a contribution
to research costs. See
http://www.strath.gla.ac.uk/synergy/scholarships.html for more details on
the scheme.
To apply for the scheme an interested student needs to contact potential
supervisors in both universities. A proposal must be put forward for a
scholarship and accepted by the faculties of both departments before it
can be submitted to Synergy. This means that interested students should be
looking for supervisors about now.
If you think any of your undergraduates would be interested in applying
for a Synergy PhD scholarship in the overlapping areas of geology, civil
engineering and/or statistics, please ask them to contact myself
(University of Glasgow, [log in to unmask]) or Becky Lunn (University
of Strathclyde, [log in to unmask]). Our recent collaborations
include mathematical modelling of hydraulic permeability evolution in the
damage zone surrounding faults
(http://www.sbe.hw.ac.uk/research/watermngment/jonathan_willson.htm)and collecting information on fault zone architecture to improve estimates
of bulk fault zone properties
(http://gsa.confex.com/gsa/2005AM/finalprogram/abstract_94910.htm). Becky
and I will both be attending the TSG meeting in Manchester and will be
happy to talk to any interested students in person.
Regards
Zoe Shipton
