medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From Acta sanctorum:
Rursum nonnulli vix credere possunt, [S. Ioannnis Baptistæ:] nos veras B. Ioannis Baptistæ habere Reliquias; asserentes, eas olim a Paganis penitus concrematas. Qui si historias exacte perlegissent, facile agnoscerent, plurima ipsius B. Ioannis sacratissima ossa, dum a Gentilibus concremarentur, collecta & sublata per fideles Christianos fuisse. Sic enim capite 28. vndecimi libri historiæ Ecclesiasticæ legimus: Iuliani temporibus, velut relaxatis frenis, efferbuit in omnem sæuitiam feritas Paganorum. [Ruffin. l. 2. c. 28.]
There are several other such references in the AA. SS. database. Some seem to mean ashes as "mortal remains".

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Though not a medieval saint, John the Baptist's bones
were (according to tradition) burned by Julian the
Apostate -- and Genoa Cathedral lays claim to the
ashes as a relic.
A painting by Geertgen Tot Sint Jans in Vienna
illustrates the burning
