medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (31. October) is the feast day of:
Quentin (late 3rd cent.) Quentin appears to have been a martyr,
killed somewhere around the modern town of Saint-Quentin (France). A
rather exciting passio was written long after Q's death---it gives a
long list of really nasty tortures that failed to kill the saint, so
that eventually he had to be decapitated.
Foillan (d. c. 655) Foillan was the brother of SS Fursey and Ultan.
All three brothers left Ireland to evangelize in England. They built
a monastery in East Anglia. Fursey went to Gaul. When non-Christian
Mercians destroyed their monastery, Foillan and Ultan followed. F.
settled near Nivelles, founding a monastery at Fosses and working as
a missionary in Brabant.. F. and some companions were murdered by
outlaws while travelling on a monastic visitation---which gives F.
ranking as a martyr.
Begu (late 7th cent.) The Anglo-Saxon nun Begu was a devout
visionary who appears in the pages of Bede. In c. 1125, monks of
Whitby found a tomb inscribed "Hoc est sepulchrum Begu." They
immediately took B's bones to Whitby and started reporting miracles.
Wolfgang of Regensburg (d. 994) The Swabian Wolfgang was raised at
Reichenau, where he became the friend of an important noble named
Henry. He followed Henry when H. became archbishop of Trier, winning
a job as teacher in the cathedral school. But when H. died, W.
became a monk at Einsiedeln. He soon set off to convert Magyars
(with little success) and in 972 was made bishop of Regensburg. W.
was an active reformer, even giving up the bishop's traditional right
to be abbot of St. Emmeram's in favor of the reformer Ramould. He
preached, gave to the poor, and played an active political role. One
of his students became Emperor Henry II. W. was canonized in 1052.
