medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (30. October) is the feast day of:
Serapion of Antioch (d. 211) Serapion served as bishop of Antioch
for 12 years. He was an active writer (Eusebius gives an extract
from one of S's works against the Montanists), and appears to have
been regarded as a leading theologian of his time.
Aethelnoth of Canterbury (d. 1038) Aethelnoth became a monk at
Glastonbury, then dean of Christ Church, Canterbury, before Cnut
appointed him archbishop of Canterbury in 1020. AE was a royal
counsellor. With royal consent, he also forcibly translated the body
of St. Alphege from London to Canterbury.
Benvenuta of Cividale (blessed) (d. 1292) Benvenuta Boiani was the
youngest of seven daughters. She became a devotee of the Virgin Mary
from a young age and soon took a vow of chastity and became a
Dominican tertiary (living in her own home). B. practiced rigorous
and extremely painful self-moritifications; she had frequent visions
and raptures. Her popular cult was approved in 1765.
