medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (6. August) is the feast day of:
Justus and Pastor (d. 304) These were boys of Complutum (now Alcala
de Henares, Spain), aged 13 and 9. Their acta tell that the Roman
governor came to town, caught some Christians, and started torturing
them. J and P ran away from their school to where this was going on
and loudly proclaimed that they were Christians, too. They were
whipped to discourage them, but kept on defying the governor, and so
were beheaded. They are the patrons of Alcala and Madrid.
Hormisdas (d. 523) Hormisdas was a Campanian; his name, however, is
Persian, so his parents may have been immigrants to Italy. H. was a
Roman deacon, elected pope in 514. His pontificate was largely
occupied with the Acacian schism between east and west. He won; the
compromise formula is known as the Formula of Hormisdas.
Martyrs of Cardena (8th cent.) (blessed) A reputed 200 monks of St.
Peter's, Cardena, killed by invading Muslims. Their cult was
confirmed in 1603.
Octavian (d. 1132) Octavian was the brother of Pope Callixtus II
(also a saint). He was a Benedictine monk at Pavia before becoming
bishop of Savona in 1129. His cult was confirmed in 1793.
