medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (3. July) is the feast day of:
Thomas (1st cent.) Thomas, called Didymus ("the twin") in John, was
one of the twelve apostles, most noted for his good sense in wanting
to confirm the wild rumors about Jesus' resurrection before accepting
them. So he's "doubting" Thomas, rather than noting that he's the
only apostle ever to call Jesus "God." A strong tradition tells that
T. eventually made his way to southern India, where he founded a
Christian community; the Syriac Christians of Malabar claim that T.
was martyred and his body buried at Mylapore near Madras in the year
72. No fewer than four apocryphal texts were fathered on Thomas: the
Gnostic *Acts*, the *Apocalypse*, the Gospel of T, and the Infancy
Gospel of T.
Heliodorus of Attino (d. c. 405) Heliodorus was part of St. Jerome's
circle in Palestine for a time, but returned to Italy where he became
(probably the first) bishop of Attino sometime before 381. Jerome
rebuked him at some length for giving up the monastic life, but later
acknowledged that he was a very good pastor.
Leo II (d. 683) Leo was a Sicilian, elected to the papacy probably
in January 681, although he didn't receive imperial approval until
July 682. He seems to have been good to the poor. L. was removed
from the universal calendar in 1960.
Raymund of Toulouse (d. 1118) Raymund Gayrard was a native of
Toulouse who devoted himself to religion when his wife died. He
remained a layman, spending his time and money caring for the needy
(even Jews). He founded an almshouse for 13 poor people, built two
stone bridges, and was eventually ordained and became a canon at
Saint-Sernin. His cult was approved in 1652.
