medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Perhaps I should add that amongst my meagre collection of liturgical
reconstructions is one for the Second Mass of Christmas, "as it might have
been conducted in Metz Cathedral on Saturday December 25th 902". This has
the following Offertory:
Deus enim firmavit orbem terrae qui
non commovebitur: parata sedes tua
Deus ex tunc a saeculo tu es.
Dominus regnavit decorem induit:
induit Dominus fortitudinem et
praecinxit se virtute.
Ex tunc a saeculo tu es.
Mirabilis in excelsis Dominus:
testimonia tua credibilia facta sunt
nimis: domum tuam decent sancta
Domine in longitudine dierum.
Ex tunc a saeculo tu es.
This is considerably longer than the Sarum/Tridentine one:
Deus firmavit orbem terrae, qui
non comovebitur: parata sedes tua,
Deus, ex tunc, a saeculo tu es.
There is also a more substantial Offertory in the Mass of the Circumcision,
"as it might have been conducted in Beauvais Cathedral on Saturday January
1st 1228":
Tui sunt caeli et tua est terra: orbem
terrarum et plenitudinem ejus tu
fundasti. Justitia et judicium
praeparatio sedis tuae.
Tu humiliasti sicut vulneratum
superbum et in virtute brachii tui
dispersisti inimicos tuos. Firmetur
manus tua et exaltetur dextera tua
Domine.
Dextera Dei cum Patre sempiterna
sine tempore terris hodie apparens
de sancta virgine sancte semper
hanc serva plebem benedicens
sancta dextera tua Domine.
John Briggs
