medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
No, certainly they are not. Chastity is the sexual restraint suitable to
one's condition. Thus a chaste spouse limits sexual activity to his/her
partner. Once theologians determined that Mary was a perpetual virgin,
roughly in the fourth/fifth centuries, they tended to explain the presence
of "brothers and sisters" of Jesus mentioned in the Gospels as children of
Joseph by an earlier marriage. The idea that Joseph was himself a perpetual
virgin developed around the fifteenth or sixteenth century but I am not sure
of the evolution of the story.
