medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Thank you for answering my query about the contents of the introduction to
the _OT_, Luca. I'm well aware of the musicological limitations of this and
other modern editions. However, your note confirms my earlier lament that
most of the research and commentary on liturgical texts is from a
musicological perspective. My own interest is in following not the musical
evolution but the theological motivation of texts and their relationship to
the formulary (-ies) in which we find them. Research into the complex
birthing of liturgical texts, especially, that attempts to detect patterns
amid this diversity is difficult and scarce. Discussions on this list are a
valuable reminder that the liturgical texts and biblical versions in the
medieval world were far more complex and diverse than is often appreciated.

Although a useful tool, the Off. Tr. should not be considered a "critical"
edition and research on the modality of the offertories and their verses is
impossible if based only upon it. This edition, mainly based upon the
manuscript fo St Benigne of Dijon (the famous Montpellier codex) doesn't
follow its source. And even its source should be checked against better
manuscripts.
This remarks are important for the whole chant research: modern
editions are simply useful, but no research should be based on
them!
