medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (7. June) is the feast day of:
Paul I of Constantinople (d. c. 350) Paul became patriarch of
Constantinople in c. 336, but immediately ran into problems: it was
the orthodox clergy who had elected him; the Arians elected somebody
else. And the emperor, Constans I, was an Arian. Paul was exiled,
and returned to downright war between the two factions. As if this
weren't bad enough, the general who was sent to restore order was
murdered when he ordered our saint of the day out of the city.
Constans arrived and exiled P. again, later accepted him briefly, but
finally exiled him to Armenia where he was starved and finally
strangled.
Colman of Dromore (6th cent.) According to tradition, Coman was born
in Dalriada (Scotland) and became a disciple of t. Ailbhe of Emly.
He built a monastery at Dromore (Co. Down, Ireland) and was first
bishop there.
Willibald (d. 786) Willibald was the brother of SS. Winebald and
Walburga. W., his brother, and their father went on a pilgrimage to
Rome; after dad died, W. continued as a pilgrim for several years.
In 740 he met the pope, who sent him to aid his cousin Boniface in
the mission field. So W. ended up as bishop of Eichstatt. W. and
his brother founded the double monastery of Heidenheim. W. was the
first known Englishman to visit the Holy Land; his *Hodoeporicon*
tells of his travels there. My saints' book of the year says that W.
was canonized in 938, which really doesn't sound plausible to me.
Gottschalk (d. 1066) Gottschald was a Wendish prince who worked
actively to convert his people to Chritianity (founding monasteries,
bringing in Saxon monks, etc.) until he was killed by followers of
his brother-in-law, who had provoked an anti-Christian rising.
Robert of Newminster (d. 1159) Robert was a native of Yorkshire who
became a monk at Whitby. He and a group of monks from St. Mary's,
York founded the monastery of Fountains, which became famous for
holiness and asceticism. Robert himself went on in 1138 to serve as
founding abbot of Newminster Abbey. R. founded three other houses,
and wrote a commentary on the Psalms. His tomb became a popular
pilgrimage center.
