medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (11. June) is the feast day of:
Barnabas (1st cent.) Barnabus was a Cypriote Jew who sold his
property and gave the proceeds to the apostles, then lived communally
with the earliest Christians of Jerusalem. He traveled with Paul and
with John Mark. Tradition adds that B. preached at Alexandria and
Rome, founded the Cypriote church, was the bishop of Milan (which
ain't so), and was stoned to death at Salamis in c. 61. The
apocryphal *Epistle of Barnabus* is now believed to have been written
by an Alexandrian, while the *Gospel of Barnabus* was probably by an
Italian Christian who converted to Islam; the *Acts of Barnabus* was
long attributed to John Mark, but is now recognized as a
fifth-century work.
Parisio (d. 1267) Parisio was a native of either Bologna or Treviso.
He became a Camaldolese at the age of 12, and in 1190 (at age 30) was
appointed chaplain for a convent at Treviso. He is supposed to have
held that office for 77 years, winning attention for his prophetic
ability and miracles.
