medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Carlos,
From my own work on Sedulius Scottus I would say that it is not untypical for Carolingian times and maybe especially for Hiberno-Latin authors to associate saints or wouldbe-saint bishops with the four rivers of paradise (based on the similarity with a fountain watering the world with the doctrine of the four gospels), yet I am not sure about associations with the tetramorph of the evangelists. For the tetramorph, there were two slightly differing traditions (established by Ambrose and Augustine) interpreting it morally as a figure of the four cardinal virtues, and this might be the reason (or one reason) why your abbot is associated with the lion and the eagle. If you are interested, I could dig up some textual sources from my files.
Best, O.
