medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (9. May) is the feast day of:
Beatus (actually "Beati") Today is the feast day of two saints named
Beatus. 1) Beatus of Lungern (d. c. 112?) is a figure of legend. He
was a hermit who lived in a cave on Mt. St. Beatenberg (Switzerland).
Legend adds to that that he was the apostle of Switzerland, baptized
in Britain by St. Barnabas and ordained in Rome by St. Peter, who
sent him to evangelize the Swiss. He also fought and killed a
dragon. 2) Beatus of Vendome (3rd cent.) was a missionary in the
Garonne, Vendome, Laon, and Nantes regions.
Pachomius (d. 348) Pachomius was a native of the Upper Thebaid
(Egypt). He was drafted into the army and so impressed by how nice
Christians were to recruits that he converted. He became a disciple
of the hermit Palaemon and in c. 320 built his own hermitage at
Tabennisi. And then disciples came---in their 1000s, it seems. P.
organized them into a community and founded six other monasteries and
a convent. He is credited as the father of cenobitic monasticism.
Gerontius (d. 501) Gerontius was bishop of Cervia (Ficocle) near
Ravenna. He was murdered by bandits while returning from a synod in
Rome.
