medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (21. May) is the feast day of:
Constantine the Great (d. 337) While some might question
Constantine's personal holiness, he certainly rates commemoration as
the greatest patron of Christianity of all time, and appears on both
Catholic and Orthodox calendars of saints.
Ageranus and companions (d. 888) A group of monks, killed while
defending the altar of their church (Bleze, Cote-d'Or) from attacking
vikings.
Godric of Finchale (d. 1170) Godric was a native of Norfolk was a
peddler and then a sailor. He went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem and
Compostela, went home, went on pilgrimage to Rome, became a hermit.
He settled as a hermit for his last sixty years near Durham.
A modern saint: Andrew Bobola (d. 1657) The Polish Andrew Bobola
became a Jesuit in 1611. He was a very successful missionary among
the Orthodox---which made him widely hated by many. He was
eventually captured during a Cossack attack, tortured, and beheaded.
AB was canonized in 1938.
