medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (28. May) is the feast day of:
Senator (d. 475) This seems a strange personal name for the fifth
century. Senator was Leo the Great's delegate to Constantinople,
after which he became bishop of Milan.
Justus of Urgel (d. c. 550) Justus was first bishop of Urgel
(Spain). He wrote a commentary on the Song of Songs.
Germanus of Paris (d. 576) Germanus was abbot of St. Symphorian,
Autun before being named bishop of Paris in 554. He was very good at
converting people, and miraculously cured King Childebert I of an
illness. Which might explain why nobody killed him, despite his
constant denunciations of noble and royal immorality.
William of Gellone (d. 812) William was a Carolingian courtier who
became duke of Aquitaine. He was regarded as an ideal Christian
warrior, even defeating the Muslims in battle. But he gave it all up
to become a monk, founding a monastery (and convent) for himself at
Gellone. He figures in several medieval romances, including
*Aliscans* and *La Prise d'Orange*. W. was canonized in 1066.
Bernard of Montjoux (or of Menthon) (d. 1081) Bernard was probably
an Italian who became vicar general of Aosta and spent more than four
decades building schools and churches in his Alpine diocese. He's
best remembered for two hospices he built in the mountain
passes--named the Great and Little Bernard after him. (The operators
of these hospices are the guys who later invented the St. Bernard
dog, I gather.)
Ignatius of Rostov (d. 1288) Ignatius served as archimandrite of the
Theophany monastery of Rostov before becoming bishop there in 1262.
He was a noted peacemaker and helped defend his diocese aganst the
Mongols.
