medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
> *are* there any medieval parallels?
Speaking of medieval parallels, one of my students claims that John Paul II's body
is to be divided, his heart being buried in Poland, and the rest under St Peter's
basilica. This was a practice that the medieval papacy tried, with limited success, to
stop in the early 14th century. I hadn't realized it was still being done. Can anyone
confirm this?
In a related sense, are contemporary saints' bodies still being divvied up as relics? I
have heard suggestions from high ranking Catholics in the news that the pope is
already privy to the Beatific Vision.
Cheers,
Jim Bugslag
