Dear Marijim,
During the 14th century, St Macarius was incorporated, in Italy, into the iconography
of the Three Living and the Three Dead, addressing the Three Living (the Three
Dead in Italian versions, lay in their coffins, while in northern Europe, they stood up
and addressed the Living without the aid of Macarius as intermediary). The earliest
version including St Macarius, I believe, is the fresco in the Camposanto in Pisa,
from the 1330s.
Cheers,
Jim Bugslag
