However the link element also contains a custom type of
type="application/ieeelom+xml", which unless I'm mistaken is not a
recognized mime type, however this would deal with Andys point about robots
(providing thay look at the type).
This type definition also seems to add a level of complexity although it is
in keeping with application/rss+xml.

Probably worth noting that rel="meta" is a fairly widely adopted
approach, both by DCMI and by the RDF community more widely... so seems
odd to do something different. On the other hand, the problem with using
a very generic link type like 'meta' is that robots have to visit the
linked metadata before they can determine if it is useful to them (i.e.
they might find LOM/XML, they might find DC/XML or they might find
something else at the end of the link).
On balance though, I'd stick with existing practice rather than inventing
a new link type.
