Subject: Creating a Health & Safety Statistics User Group
Dear Alison
We have been sending the e-mail below to a range of people who we think
would be interested. I am not sure whether you would personally want to
sign up for this group, but I am sure you will know (and know of) people on
the HSUG and Rad Stats circuits to whom it would be of interest. If so, it
would be very helpful if you could forward this on to them (or let us have
their contact details).
With best wishes
John

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) draws on various administrative and
survey sources to publish a wide range of statistics on occupational health
and safety, which serve a variety of customers. We have consulted with
some of you in the past, for example at the workshop on baselines and
progress measurement for the Revitalising Health & Safety / Securing Health
Together health targets held in December 2000. We would now like to
establish a more regular mechanism for engaging with our external customer
base and improving the value and use of health and safety statistics. This
will also help us to comply with National Statistics guidelines on user
consultation.
In particular, we are keen to be able to consult users on
the development of new statistical products,
peer review of the statistical judgement on progress against the
targets, at the midpoint of the Revitalising strategy (to be published
with this year's statistics on 8 November 2005)
future plans for HSE's survey sources, including the Workplace Health
and Safety Survey (WHASS).
Our annual statistics publication has a new format, designed to be shorter
and more accessible - with all the detailed statistics on our website at
http://www.hse.gov.uk/statistics/index.htm.
Please can you let us know if you would be interested in
receiving a copy of the 2004/05 publication in November
joining a 'virtual community' to whom we could email announcements of
new statistical products, release dates etc
participating in a consultation later this year about the judgement on
progress against the targets
joining a workshop, probably in December, to consider the progress
judgement and other issues.
I would be grateful if you could reply to Alan Spence (details below) by
the end of October at the latest. We will then assess the level of
interest in a workshop and begin making the arrangements, as well as
firming up ideas for the working of any 'Health and Safety Statistics User
Group'.
Thank you.
