I'm reading _Latin: The Empire of a Sign_, which is
about the history of the language from about 1500 or
so on. There's a whole chapter on the various
national pronunciations and how the philologically
reconstructed Ciceronian-era pronunciation gradually
supplanted them in Latin teaching after about 1860. I
like to think of it though as Weenie! Weedy! Wicky!
