Only getting to everything now. I had a totally infested computer and have
been rebuilding my C> drive from the ground up. In the process, I lost my
address book, all my accumulated mail with stored software codes, and lots
of programs. At least the writing and bookmarks were on another drive.

I have played clarinet for years, though hardly on the level of Artie Shaw
or his nemesis Benny Something-or-other, but I nevertheless take notice
when one of the great players vanishes. It was a shock, yes, but at age 94
who can complain? Artie Shaw was what I'd like to grow up to be, a
cantankerous old bastard who seemed to use his cantankerousness and
bastardy as covers for a degree of humility. I think it was the NY Times
that quoted a comment about his chain of gorgeous wives: he said it was the
music that got them, not him, even though "I was a pretty good-looking
stud. Did anyone ever think Mick Jagger was handsome?" No comment from
him as a personality about being God's gift to women. He probably was one
of those men who had zero business getting married in the first place. At
least two of the flashiest women in his life were no more successful at it
than he was.
Oddly I have never read his stories, which I gather are pretty good work.
I envy him two things: his stupendous musical gift (player, composer,
conductor) and Ava Gardner:-).
