This thread has got me thinking all morning. I got here really annoyed with
John Huphrys (no change there then) after his interview this morning which
appeared (again) to ignore the fact that 95% of "NHS" consultations already
take place in the private sector, and with consistently high performance and
satisfaction ratings.
So then, in this "I'm SO not an NHS employee" frame of mind, I read this
thread and immediately got onto my high horse - "Who are they to dictate to
us...?", "How dare they...?" etc.
Fortunately I quickly calmed down to a more rational self, and thought about
it. Although we are private sector providers, the relationship between us
and the NHS is so monopolised, it put me in mind of the complaints we hear
from farmers about the supermarkets, viz. that they hold so much of the
market that they are essentially able to dictate terms to the independent
suppliers on a "do it or go bust" basis.
This thread has shown us that we are in the same boat - most PCTs are quite
benevolent, but they don't have to be. Actually, if my PCT was to demand I
do something (even outside the contractual arrangements), and they were to
back up that demand with a Tesco-like negotiating position, then I don't
know what "right" I have to expect them to continue contracting with me. OK
so I can rely on a dearth of other providers to keep them sweet at present,
but that may not continue.
Do we have rights which are not springing to mind? If not, then I might open
a smallholding, as at least then I have four to choose from.
