Last Chance to get tickets for Writers on Immigration
Big talk on this Small Island
Andrea Levy, author of the award-winning novel, Small Island, will read
from her work at a Writers on Immigration event being held at the Museum of
London on Thursday 16 June from 6.30pm-8pm.
A child of the Windrush, Levy’s parents arrived in Britain in 1948 in
search of a better life. Small Island examines not only the conflicts of
two cultures thrown together after a terrible war, but also the kindness
and strength people can show to each other.
Joining Ms Levy, who won the Orange Prize for Fiction, the Whitbread Book
of the Year and the Commonwealth Writer’s prize for Small Island in 2005,
will be writers Rachel Lichtenstein and Hugo Hamilton. Together they will
reflect on the influence that immigration has had on their writing, take
part in an open discussion and answer questions from the floor. David
Herman, veteran broadcaster and journalist, will chair the event.
Writers on Immigration is part of a series of events, coordinated by Moving
Here, to mark the anniversary of the 1905 Aliens Act, the first piece of
major legislation to restrict immigration to Britain.
As part of the series, The National Archives will host a conference in
October which will explore contemporary immigration issues.
The Jewish Museum’s exhibition Closing the Door? Immigrants to Britain 1905
to 2005 continues until 21 August 2005.
