Hello Kirsty
Here at Newport Museum & Art Gallery (South Wales), we have just
received funding to start setting up a reminiscence service for local
care homes.
Phase 1 of our funding enabled us to run a consultation programme to
investigate the needs, opportunities and operating arrangements for the
proposed scheme. Phase 2 is allowing us to progress with the findings of
the report. As part of the scheme we are setting up training sessions
for the care staff who are interested in borrowing the reminiscence
boxes that we are creating and who will be running the reminiscence
sessions in their own organisations. The first of these training
sessions was held yesterday and one of the topics covered concerned
numbers per session. Our trainers recommend the best numbers for a group
is about 6 to 10 people - much larger and you run into problems.
If you would like to chat with us about how we are progressing and what
we are learning, or to be put in contact with our trainers, please feel
free to telephone (01633 840064) - we have also received lots of help
and guidance concerning seting up the scheme from Hampshire Museum
Services and ideas for packaging from Reading Museum Service.
Best Wishes, Gail

I am currently devising reminiscence sessions to run both in-house and
as
outreach in the community. I will be running the sessions on my own
(obviously though with carers present) and was wondering what maximum
numbers I should stipulate? I am expecting some groups will include
dementia sufferers and expect the numbers to therefore be different.
My
problem is we get coach parties coming and wanting reminiscence
sessions
and I don't think it is feasible to have 1 session with 40 people in
(this
has happened in the past!).
Hope you can help
Regards
Kirsty
