The Inland Revenue has recently ruled that the freelance educators
employed by Nottingham City Museums fall into the category of 'examiners,
lecturers, teachers and instructors' and are therefore required to pay
Class 1 National Insurance if their earnings exceed £480 a month and they
work in this capacity more than three times in three consecutive months.
As the 'employer, the City Council also has to pay the equivalent
Employer's Contribution.
As this has implications for the level of fees charged to schools in turn,
I'd be interested to know if this ruling has been applied to museum
educators elsewhere, and how it may have affected your service when it was
first applied?
Many thanks.
