Hello All again
I'd really appreciate some thoughts based on your experience of or research
into the following issue. There's undoubtedly lots of articles, reports adn
books that a) I should know about b) should have read and c) haven't but
would really like to be reminded of
but here goes...
Which interpretation approaches for local history objects in galleries do
you think children visiting with schools would find most inspired their
creativity, stimulated their thinking skills, intrigued, stimulated, found
fun etc . (I realise it's as much how you use the space and things like
handling collections that matters but on this occasion I just want to think
about the physical interpretation approach and methods):
original objects as 'treasures'
decontextualised on metaphorical (or real!) pedestals
history objects as art objects, displayed to make a strong artistic visual
impression, rather than to show their significance
history objects as curiosities - strange, exotic things from a land called
the past
original objects in some kind of context: such as
3D models - preferably interactive (lights up, does something useful)
pictorial backdrops - dioramas, wall paintings, contextual drawings, eg
armour drawing providing backdrop for original fittings
voices - oral history recordings,
ie objects as functional, practical things which had meanings to others.
If you've found other interpretative approaches for local history objects in
galleries with this particular audience have worked well, I'd really love to
know. Will share ideas as usual.
Very many thanks once again. - please reply to me off-group
