Further Information:
The St Luke’s Community History Project has emerged from work carried out
with local people through Islington Local History Centre, London
Metropolitan Archives and the Family Record Centre. A small exhibition
created by these three partners encouraged local people to express their
interest in forming a community history group.
As a result of that interest the project idea has developed. The
involvement of the Museum of Methodism, The Museum of London and Islington
Library Service strengthen the support on offer to the community in a
range of ways, from assistance with research to basic skills in IT.
The project has now become part of ALM London’s Community Links programme.
The information below is taken from ALM’s website at www.almlondon.org.uk.
Community LInKS: An ALM London demonstration project
Community LInKS is an ALM London demonstration project that aims to build
on and support the potential of London's archives, libraries and museums
to contribute to the achievement of a number of targets linked to
Neighbourhood Renewal. Community LInKS is working to support four cross-
domain partnerships from different London Boroughs to engage with the
local Neighbourhood Renewal programmes, New Deal for Communities. By
working to address the issues of Neighbourhood Renewal the archives,
libraries and museums involved will further develop their role in engaging
new audiences and working to support and engage the local community.
Through Community LInKS it is hoped to achieve:
• Ongoing cross domain relationships in each of the four boroughs
involved.
• An ongoing relationship with local neighbourhood renewal agencies.
• An ongoing relationship with community groups.
The full partnership involves the domains of archives, libraries and
museums and will serve to offer support and guidance to local people
wishing to be involved and build their own project. The main objective is
to help local people establish a group which can take the project forward
in the long term and which will contribute to the regeneration of the area
and the social health of the community.
The St Luke’s area Islington lies between St John’s Street, City Road and
Beech Street in EC1:
