& Commonwealth Museum is hosting a one day INSET for teachers and museum
professionals on Wednesday the 16th March.
A good opportunity to stay over and enjoy Bristol and benefit from a one day
forum as well as one day more focused professional development.

Understanding Slavery Professional Development INSET
Wednesday March 16th 2005
A one day course for Citizenship & History co-ordinators, teachers of
Citizenship & History, Museum & Art education professionals, LEA advisors &
PGCE students.
During the day participants will have an opportunity to learn about the
findings of the Understanding Slavery Initiative, a major DFES/ DCMS funded
partnership project involving the British Empire & Commonwealth Museum,
Bristol City Museum, National Maritime Museum, National Museums Liverpool
and Hull City Museum.
Training will be provided on how to use a variety of techniques for teaching
about the Transatlantic Slave Trade, particularly developing empathy,
including:
handling objects,
role-play,
video
radio based activities
By the end of the day participants will be able to deal confidently with the
challenges and issues relating to the subject matter, and understand the
sensitivities it presents from a variety of perspectives.
Feedback from the last Understanding Slavery Professional Development day in
September was extremely positive, with comments such as:
