1985 was a significant year in London LGBT history. In that year the GLC
published 'Changing The World', a charter of gay rights, the London
Lesbian and Gay Centre opened at 69 Cowcross Street in Farringdon ad the
Black Lesbian and Gay Centre was founded. Twenty years on the third annual
LGBT Archives and History conference at London Metropolitan Archives is
picking up the theme of 'changing the world'.
Speakers include historian Matt Cook, speaking on George Ives and the
early gay reform movement established in the 1890s and its impact on
lesbian and gay lives and politics through to the present. Sociologist and
activist MAry McIntosh, author of the ground breaking essay, 'The
Homosexual Role' in 1968, will be discussing the legacy of the Gay
Liberation Front. Historian Matt Houlbrook will be discussing his new
book, 'Queet London: Perils and Pleasures in the Sexual Metropolis, 1918-
57. The Rukus Foundation present their art based work which collects
memories and experiences from the Black LGBT community. There will also be
contributions from Ben Summerskill of Stonewall, Sue Donnelly of the Hall-
Carpenter Archives, Darryl McIntyre of the Museum of London and Rachel
Hasted of The National Archives.
