medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
This is what I've learned/read about Saint-Denis and welcome correction. Saint Genevieve constructed a rather primitive chapel above the remains of Denis at Catolacum, which quickly became a pilgrimage site. Dagobert, at least according to legend, was fleeing the wrath of his father and took (temporary) refuge there. He furthermore entrenched (if he did not begin) the tradition of burying "French" kings and "nobles" there (can't remember if Aregonde antedates or postdates him) and it was he who sent for monks to establish a monastery there. Saint-Denis was already a pilgrimage site of some importance before it included an abbey.
I'm going to look at New Advent and will send the URL if I find something worthwhile.
