medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear list,
my perennial query when this topic comes up: Has anyone seen figures
who are NOT part of the trinity with cruciform halos?

Very interesting... However, "even though in western medieval art
all manifestations of the Christian divine regularly are shown with
cruciform haloes," there are some interesting exceptions, going in both directions. On the med-art list a while back, mention was made of the evangelist Matthew shown with a cruciform halo, assumed to be a slip of an ignorant/incompetent/sloppy painter of an illuminated ms. And in Gislebertus' Adoration of the Magi at Autun, the child Jesus has no halo, presumably because there isn't room. If he were haloed, Mary's face would be covered. Finally, I've "heard" that the Verbum Dei is usually represented as a child and that this is a characteristic image of the Eastern Church rather than the Western. Comments, anyone?
